Social Innovation Task Force

Task Force Vision

New Orleans has a unique opportunity to improve the social and economic status of its residents by supporting social innovation. Social innovation is the use of new methodologies to address specific social issues in a manner that garners greater results than existing models. Successful social innovation engages all sectors: public, private, philanthropic and nonprofit resulting in improved quality of life of all residents.

Task Force Mission

The Social Innovation Task Force was tasked to recommend ways that city government can support social innovation by:

  • Being a good partner - how can city government be more responsive to social innovation efforts such as removing silos at City Hall, convening partners across sectors with similar goals, connecting social innovators to each other, and recognizing successful efforts.

  • Identifying investment opportunities - how can city government provide social innovators access to investment opportunities such as communicating timely and accurate information on funding availability, facilitating relationships with local and national funders, supporting applications for national grants and considering alternative funding sources.

  • Improving policy - what specific policy changes needed to expand the impact of social innovators such as barriers to public funding, public land use, permitting, etc.
